Legislation proposed by Senator Tracy Pennycuick and Senator Frank Farry, aimed at modernizing the Workers’ Compensation system, is set to become law. The bill, known as Senate Bill 1232, seeks to transition benefit payments from paper checks to direct deposit. This measure has gained final legislative approval.
The bill allows individuals entitled to compensation to opt for funds to be directly deposited into their chosen accounts. Insurers will no longer need to provide paper checks if the recipient has a bank account capable of accepting direct deposits.
Currently, over 95% of workers receive their pay through direct deposit.
“This legislation will help workers and cut costs,” said Pennycuick. “Injured workers will get their benefits in a faster, more convenient manner, and insurers will be able to reduce processing time and mailing costs.”
Senator Farry expressed satisfaction with the collaborative effort: “I am pleased to have worked with Sen. Pennycuick on this legislation that will modernize the Worker’s Compensation system, benefitting both injured workers and insurers in the commonwealth.”
The Workers’ Compensation Advisory Council unanimously recommended these reforms.
