Rep. Donna Scheuren, a Republican from Montgomery, has announced her intention to propose an amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution that would prevent illegal aliens from obtaining driver licenses in the state. Scheuren expressed concerns about the safety of Pennsylvania residents, citing incidents where American citizens have been harmed in accidents involving illegal aliens.

Scheuren stated, "For multiple years now, the debate on immigration policy has been at the center of both federal and state politics. Part of this debate that I feel has been overlooked far too often has been the issuing of driver licenses to illegal aliens."

She criticized previous federal policies and neighboring states like New York and New Jersey for allowing illegal aliens to obtain driver licenses. According to Scheuren, these policies incentivize illegal border crossings and compromise road safety.

"The failed federal policies of the previous administration have seen far too many criminals come over our border," she remarked. "Our neighbors in New York and New Jersey have failed as well by allowing illegal aliens to have driver licenses."

Scheuren emphasized her belief in letting Pennsylvanians decide on this issue through a constitutional amendment vote: "I believe the best pathway is to allow the people of Pennsylvania to vote on a constitutional amendment that would make this a permanent law."

The proposed legislation will require support from other lawmakers before it can proceed. Scheuren hopes her colleagues will co-sponsor her proposal so that it can be presented for public decision-making.
