HARRISBURG – U.S. Army combat veteran Sen. Tracy Pennycuick (R-24) is inviting Pennsylvania women who served in the armed forces to take part in a state Capitol ceremony celebrating their service.

The ceremony will be held at noon on Monday, June 10, 2024. Female veterans and family members of female veterans are invited. The event will include an exhibit featuring photos and biographies of women who served.

Sen. Tracy Pennycuick emphasized the importance of recognizing the contributions of women in the military, stating, "Women across Pennsylvania have served the commonwealth and nation with distinction and we’re inviting them to tell their stories."

Those interested in participating in the event are encouraged to register and upload material at SenatorPennycuick.com/Women-Veterans-Day. The deadline for all entry and RSVP information is April 5.

Pennycuick, who sponsored legislation observing Women Veterans Day in Pennsylvania each year on June 12, highlighted the significance of the event in honoring female veterans. She urged, “If you’re a female military veteran, or have a female family member who served, please contact us so that we can celebrate your experience and inspire the next generation of women in uniform.”

The event aims to showcase the bravery and dedication of women who have served in the military, with the first Women Veterans Day Capitol exhibit being displayed in 2023. It is noted that while women have a long history of service in the American military, formal recognition as military members or veterans did not occur until 1948.

Looking towards the future, it is projected that by 2040, women will make up 17% of the total veteran population, underscoring the growing importance of recognizing and honoring the service of women in the armed forces.
