Why do certain search terms result in racially specific results? A search for “cute baby” yields images of a white child, while the search for a “basketball player” generates pictures of black NBA superstars. Machine Bias, or Algorithm Bias, is something that most citizens would not immediately recognize. However, systemic racism has become institutionalized in artificial intelligence and needs to be addressed. This presentation focuses on machine bias, why it exists, and the challenges of creating a technology that is unprejudiced and impartial.
