Rep. Donna Scheuren from Montgomery County has proposed a constitutional amendment aimed at preventing illegal aliens from obtaining driver licenses in Pennsylvania. The legislation seeks to address concerns over road safety and immigration policy.
"For multiple years now, the debate on immigration policy has been at the center of both federal and state politics," Scheuren stated. She emphasized that the issue of granting driver licenses to illegal aliens has been overlooked, citing incidents where American citizens were harmed in accidents involving illegal drivers.
Scheuren criticized previous federal policies and neighboring states like New York and New Jersey for allowing illegal aliens to have driver licenses, arguing that it encourages illegal border crossings. "The safety of Pennsylvania residents and their family members must come first," she said, particularly when individuals may not understand traffic signs or warnings.
She advocates for a constitutional amendment as a permanent solution rather than a temporary measure. "I believe the best pathway is to allow the people of Pennsylvania to vote on a constitutional amendment that would make this a permanent law," Scheuren expressed hope that her colleagues will support her proposal, allowing Pennsylvanians to decide on the matter.
Media contact for this proposal is Joe Szymanski from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives.
