Four years after listening to Michelle Obama's inspiring words at a Reach Higher college signing day event, Aisha Soumaoro '20, reflects on her experience at Bryn Mawr in a Forbes article.
At Bryn Mawr, I was able to execute the notion of creating one’s own table by fostering safe spaces for other students and pursuing various entrepreneurial ventures. Most of the women in my life are entrepreneurs, and they fueled my ambitious spirit. Through their support and guidance, I have transcended their teachings on cultivating a community as I braid other students’ hair on campus. This side hustle was my gateway to other Black, African, and Latinx women on campus. It was a safe space where I could learn and teach.
Learning not to wait for the permission or validation of others helped me to expand to other projects, such as co-authoring She’s Ready, a book dedicated to the experiences of women of color traveling the world. Each of these projects was coupled with waves of emotions, self-doubt, uncertainty, but most of all, an appreciation for my personal and professional growth.
