Five infrastructure projects in the 147th District of Pennsylvania have received funding from the Commonwealth Financing Authority, according to an announcement by Rep. Donna Scheuren (R-Montgomery). The grants come from the Department of Community and Economic Development’s Small Water and Sewer program.
The Berks-Montgomery Municipal Authority was awarded $100,000 for rehabilitating two segments of its sanitary sewer collection system. One segment is located in Douglass Township and will remove up to 50,000 gallons per day of wet weather infiltration and inflow.
Lower Salford Township Authority secured a total of $200,000 for two separate initiatives. The first project involves installing new catwalks at the Harleysville Wastewater Treatment Plant to facilitate cleaning operations. The second project includes removing nearly 1,400 feet of deteriorated asbestos cement sewer mains, manholes, and laterals, then replacing them with PVC sewer mains and lined concrete manholes to improve structural integrity and eliminate infiltration points.
Upper Frederick Township will receive $200,000 to replace an existing 8-inch water main in Perkiomen Crossing Development on Buck Road. The current fire hydrants connected to this main provide inadequate output for fire control. Planned upgrades include installing a 12-inch pipe and extending another water main branch from a nearby well; these changes are expected to increase hydrant output significantly as future phases are completed.
Additionally, New Hanover Township Authority is set to receive $350,000 for replacing 11 gates within its sewage treatment plant. This upgrade aims to enhance operational longevity and reduce maintenance costs while ensuring continuous operation.
“This is an incredible investment into our community,” said Scheuren. “Over $800,000 in grant funding will support projects across four different townships in the 147th District, and each project will improve the standard of living in these areas, and I was proud to offer my support to every one of them. I also want to thank Sen. Pennycuick for her help in securing money for the New Hanover project.”
The DCED’s Small Water and Sewer grants assist with constructing or improving water supply systems, sanitary sewers, storm sewers or flood control projects.
