The Pennsylvania Senate has passed the Save Women’s Sports Act, a bill aimed at ensuring that sports teams designated for girls and women are reserved for biological females. The legislation, known as Senate Bill 9, received bipartisan support and was co-sponsored by Senator Tracy Pennycuick (R-24).
Senator Pennycuick emphasized the importance of fairness and opportunity in athletics. “This is solely about fairness and opportunity,” she stated. “I believe that by maintaining separate, sex-specific teams, we can protect athletic opportunities for women while upholding the intent of Title IX.”
Title IX was originally established to eliminate discrimination and provide equal access to sports for female athletes. Pennycuick expressed concern that when a biological male replaces a female athlete on a team, it denies the female athlete her right to equal participation under Title IX.
