Phoenixville Hospital and Pottstown Hospital recently held flag-raising ceremonies to promote organ donation awareness. The events, part of the “2025 Hospital & Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania (HAP) Donate Life Challenge,” aimed to encourage individuals to register as organ, tissue, and cornea donors.
At Pottstown Hospital, a donor’s family and a recipient participated in the ceremony. Lynn Shoap, ICU Critical Care Manager at Pottstown Hospital, highlighted the importance of organ donation by stating: “It’s imperative to know that anyone can be a potential organ donor regardless of medical history, age or race.” She emphasized the need for donors due to over 95,000 individuals nationwide waiting for transplants.
During Phoenixville Hospital’s event, an honored live organ donor shared her story with staff members before raising the HAP Donate Life flag. Aileen Bojko, RN, BSN, Critical Care Director at Phoenixville Hospital said: “Organ donation is so important because 17 people in the US die each day while waiting for a donor.”
Key facts about donations were shared: any person can be a potential donor regardless of age or race; more than 5,000 children and adults in the region await life-saving transplants; one organ donor can save up to eight lives. For more information on becoming an organ donor, visit www.donors1.org.
